The Mary Guokas Floodplain Scholarship

1960 -2015

This scholarship fund was created in memory of Mary Rose Guokas, a vivacious woman who dedicated her time and knowledge to being a Floodplain Outreach Specialist for the Montana DNRC. Mary was known as the front woman for Montana Floodplain Outreach Program from conferences, fairs, outreach events, classrooms, and community visits; Mary met almost a quarter of the state and her travels took her back and forth across Montana.  As DNRC’ s Floodplain Outreach Coordinator and Highground Newsletter editor for nine years, she helped share information and provide important floodplain assistance to communities across the state coordinating and conducting outreach activities for different stakeholders through active participation at various professional conferences, floodplain management education with school groups, and for the general public at local events.

In establishing this scholarship, the Association of Montana Floodplain Managers (AMFM) wants to recognize the dedication to continued education and professionalism of other Floodplain Administrators and their local floodplain programs in offering assistance for Travel & Accommodations to the annual floodplain conference.

Individuals receiving scholarship funds to attend the 2019 AMFM Floodplain Conference must attend the event for those days that AMFM has provided funding and participate as a moderator for a ½ day session of the conference in order to maximize their interactions with AMFM and its members.  Any scholarship recipient, who fails to attend the event, incurs any fees from failure to attend, or cancels their registration, will be required to reimburse AMFM for any fees paid by the organization.
